Claremore High School Freshman Mariah Robinson and WRJH 8th grader Devon Hinds will peform in The Tulsa Opera production of "Dead Man Walking" based on the movie starring Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon and the book by Sister Helen Prejean. It is one of the most successful American operas of the past 20 years. The story follows a young nun who is asked to visit a death row inmate convicted for the rape and murders of two teenagers. At his request she becomes his spiritual advisor.Through meetings with him, the parents of his victims and his own family, Sister Helen makes an extraordinary journey through pain, conflict and grief to help De Rocher find his way to the truth, and the redemptive power of love.
Mariah and Devon are part of the Tulsa Youth Opera which meets weekly.Tulsa Youth Opera (TYO) is Tulsa Opera’s tuition-free training program for students in grades 3-12. Admittance is by audition only; auditions are held each June for the following season.Each season, TYO presents a full-length youth opera and one other performance. Additionally, select TYO students serve as the children’s chorus for Tulsa Opera’s mainstage productions. Rehearsals are held once weekly at the Tulsa Opera office building.
The premiere performance is tonight at 7:30 with additional shows March 2nd and 4th. Tickets range from $10-98. Many great seats are still available. This show is not recommended for those under age 18 due to brief nudity, violence and language.
